GUNMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Area
In order to realize "improvement of culture in Gunma Prefecture", which is one of the objectives of the establishment of the Gunma Symphony Orchestra,
We carry out a variety of activities rooted in the local community for the citizens of the prefecture.
The "Concerts That Touch the Heart," where members go to local facilities to perform, and the chamber performance held on the opening day of the Gunma Prefectural Assembly.
Outdoor concert "Forest and Orchestra" held in Gunma Forest,
We perform with group symphony choirs and local choirs, and hold "cafe parties" where you can get to know the members more closely.
We aim to be an orchestra rooted in the region that is loved by everyone.
We provide high school students in Gunma Prefecture with the opportunity to listen to music in a more serious program as the next stage of our mobile music classes.
Bringing Classical Music Closer As a commissioned project from Takasaki City, orchestra members travel to local facilities to perform concerts in order to spread the local musical culture as a familiar orchestra. Our small ensemble provides authentic music and excitement to those who cannot come to the concert hall.
Modeled after the orchestral performance at the United Nations General Assembly, the first performance was held at the Gunma Prefectural Assembly on March 1957, 3. As it was a rare event, the first event was packed with reporters, and the audience seats were also full. Although this event was interrupted due to renovations to the parliament building, it remains an annual event of the prefectural assembly. These days, you can watch it live on the internet.
In September 1976, the young people of the Takasaki Junior Chamber, who wanted to "grow the group symphony by the hands of the citizens," began an effort to hold concerts that would be enjoyed by a wider audience than just a handful of music fans. The "Handmade Concert by 9 Citizens and the Symphony Orchestra" was held for the first time. A similar momentum was created among the Gunkyo musicians, and in September of the same year, they decided to hold a get-together in Gunma no Mori (Takasaki City). I decided to take the class and also prepared a collection of poems. There were 21 musicians in attendance, and they enjoyed themselves peacefully with their families and others gathered on the lawn. They continued to hold similar gatherings several times, and in May 9, they held a full-fledged outdoor concert called "Forest and Orchestra" in collaboration with the Citizens' Council for Nurturing Group Symphonies. This has continued since then, and the number of supporting organizations has increased, and it is still a popular annual Golden Week event.
In 1977, the "Prefectural Arts Festival", in which various cultural organizations participated, began, and the Gunkyoku Symphony Orchestra held concerts under the name "Prefectural Arts Theater." The following year, this concert was renamed "Prefectural Music Square" and continues to this day. This project is jointly sponsored by the prefecture, municipalities, and other organizations, and is carried out with the aim of allowing groups to hear performances by the Symphonic Symphony Orchestra across a wide area within the prefecture. In addition, by holding concerts with choirs active in each region, we are expanding the scope of musical culture by increasing opportunities to perform with orchestras and appreciate choral music.
"Cafe parties" are held as an opportunity for group members and prefectural residents to interact more closely. The venue, "Café Asunaro," is a store that reopened in 1982 from "Meikyoku Sabo Asunaro" (closed in 2013), which has a deep connection with Gunkyo. This event is co-sponsored with the "Association of Prefectural Citizens Supporting the Group Symphony Orchestra" as a place where members and participants can casually talk about music.
