The year 2024 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites being registered as a World Heritage Site.
The Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites, which was listed on the World Heritage List in 2014, consists of the Tomioka Silk Mill (Tomioka City) and three sericulture-related properties (the Tajima Yahei Former House (Isesaki City), the Takayamasha Shrine Ruins (Fujioka City), and the Arafune Wind Cave (Shimonita Town)). It is a modern silk industry heritage site that focuses on technological innovation that made mass production of raw silk possible, a production volume that had been limited for a long time, and technological exchange between Japan and the world.
The Meiji government invited French raw silk expert Paul Brunat to lead the construction of the Tomioka Silk Mill. The piece will be "Pavane for a Dead Princess" by fellow French composer Maurice Ravel. Please enjoy the Gunma Symphony Orchestra's string quartet along with Gunma Prefecture's World Heritage Sites.
