Profile

In November 1945, the Takasaki Civic Orchestra was founded with the aim of restoring culture through the desolation of the post-war era, followed by the Gunma Philharmonic Orchestra the following year, the Gunma Symphony Orchestra Foundation in 11, and the Gunma Symphony Orchestra Foundation in 1963. The current name was changed to Gunma Symphony Orchestra Public Interest Incorporated Foundation.

Mobile music classes, which began in May 1947, have been viewed by more than 5 million children by 2025, and high school music classes have also been held since 656. In 1982, the movie ``Here Izumi Aru'', which was modeled after ``Gunkyo'', was released and attracted national attention, and the following year Gunma Prefecture was designated as the first ``Music Model Prefecture'' in Japan by the Ministry of Education. Ta. Furthermore, in 1955, Takasaki City built the Gunma Music Center, which became a base for a wide range of activities.

From 1981, they expanded their musical activities with support from Gunma Prefecture, and in 1994 they were simultaneously invited to the "Prague Spring International Music Festival" and "Vienna Arts Week," under the direction of music director Ken Takaseki. The group performed overseas in four European countries. The following year, he premiered his 50th anniversary commissioned work ``Distant View II for Orchestra'' (composed by Toshio Hosokawa) in Gunma, Tokyo, and received high acclaim.

In 2001, the orchestra was designated as a recipient of support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs' "Special Support Project for Artistic Creation (Arts Plan 21)" as a leading orchestra in the Japanese music scene.
In October 2003, the orchestra's early days were featured on the NHK television program "Project X: Challengers," generating a great deal of interest. In November 2004, they held a traveling music class for Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Consort of Denmark. In April 2005, they composed the theme song for the NHK morning drama series "Fight," receiving high praise. The orchestra's regular concerts, which have been held since its founding, reached their 600th performance in July 2024.

The Gunma Symphony Orchestra engages in a wide range of musical activities, including regular concerts and mobile music classes, and is widely supported by the people of Gunma Prefecture as a symbol of the prefecture's culture. It will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2025. Furthermore, it has moved its base of operations to the Takasaki Arts Theatre, which opened in September 2019, and aims to further advance and improve its performance activities.
